Enjoy the Outdoors

Mayfield Nature Trail: Take a forested stroll down to Mayfield Lake where Jason went fishing as a kid.

Willie Wildlife Marsh: A fairly short, accessible trail with viewing platforms to check out local wildlife. Up for a longer walk? Take the additional 1-mile loop all the way around.

Northhampton Beach: State Park with picnic tables, clean facilities, and a beautiful sandy beach with mountain views.

Caroga Lake State Park: State Park with all the amenities and a sandy though less-expansive beachfront with kayak rental available.

Our Favorite Nearby Hikes

Kane Mountain: A kid-friendly hike up Kane Mountain with views of Canada Lake and the surrounding Shaker Mountain Wild Forest. Can be hiked as a loop that totals 1.8 miles, but we take the longer route up and back (better views along the way and it's not so steep!).

9 Corner Lake: The official trail ends (with an outhouse) after a mile when you cross the wetland stream and get to the lake, but you can continue on around in either direction to get great views from any of the other 8 corners of the lake.

Good Luck Lake, Good Luck Mountain, Good Luck Cliffs: Over the hill and down to the lake is a fairly easy trek. Be prepared to put in some moderate effort if you take the trail up the cliffs!

Auger Falls: Enjoy this short, popular hiking trail with waterfalls and river views.

Get Out on the Water

Kayak or Canoe: We love to paddle! Check out the West Branch of the Sacandaga River, launching from Arietta and heading out and around Good Luck Lake in the Jessup River Wild Forest. There's hardly any current, making it easy to paddle in both directions. Just a lazy meandering drift through an Adirondack forest until you get to the lake. Be prepared to portage as there is plenty of beaver activity in the area!

Boating: Great Sacandaga Lake boasts a number of marinas with options including pontoon and power boat rentals, pleasure cruises, and guided tours.

Explore the Adirondacks

Lake George: Family friendly tourist destination with shopping, restaurants, boat cruises, and fabulous views of the mountains from the world-famous "Million Dollar Beach." 1h 15min

Lake Placid: Site of two Winter Olympic Games and home to the magical Mirror Lake. Restaurants, shopping, and that fairy-tale Adirondack feel. 2h 20min

High Peaks Wilderness: Home to the best views the Adirondack Park has to offer. 2h+

Tour the Historic Area

Women's Rights: Famous for formulating the agenda for Women's Rights, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born in Johnstown, NY in 1815. A bronze sculpture of Stanton was installed in Johnstown's Sir William Johnson Park in 2021.

Historic Downtown Gloversville: Visit the Fulton County Museum and tour some of downtown Gloversville's stunning turn-of-the-century commercial buildings in various stages of rehabilitation, including the Glove Theater and Schine Memorial Hall.
